The Origins of Brave Crossing
The idea for Brave Crossing crystallised on 11 Nov 2023 after encountering a series of losses in recent years. The most recent being that of my companion dog of 15 years. She was named Nikki the Brave when we adopted her as she was timid towards her own kind, perhaps reflecting a troubled past.
The pain of letting her go awoke in me this realisation that a dog is unfettered from living out its life fully. Further contemplation and dialogues with close friends all pointed towards a needed career shift after 16 years in the social service sector. It was time to move into freelance private practice.
Psychotherapy is not mere work, it is a vocation, a calling that adds Life to others as well as myself. It is an endeavour that deeply acknowledges interconnectedness: relationships with others, and relationship with self.
The language may seem abstract or new agey, and certainly contrasts with my first career in information technology where I happily worked with logic and computing machines. A mid career change into psychotherapy has helped me embrace the emotional, creative, and adventurous parts of self.
A friend taught me that we may never have a totally "safe" space. Thus I wish for Brave Crossing to be a brave space that helps people cross over to their desired life.
